Crack Cocaine Effects

Crack cocaine effects can be classified into two categories: short-term and long-term crack cocaine effects. Crack cocaine effects are detrimental to the physical, mental and emotional aspects of a drug user's life and also affects the lives of people around the user. Long-term use of the drug causes more severe crack cocaine effects.

Crack cocaine effects can be felt as soon as the drug enters a person's body. The short-term effects of crack cocaine use include a short burst of increased energy, decreased appetite, increased temperature, mental anxiety, constricted blood vessels and increased heart rate. The feeling of euphoria gained by using crack fades much more quickly that the painful after-effects. As crack cocaine use continues, the effects felt from the drug get worse and more severe.

Long-term crack cocaine effects can be much more severe than the short-term effects. These effects include restlessness, mood change, irritability, auditory hallucinations, extreme paranoia, and addiction. People who continually use crack cocaine will begin to experience feelings such as cravings, obsessions and higher tolerance, all symptoms that are characteristic of addiction. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, crack cocaine-related deaths are often a result of cardiac arrest or seizures followed by respiratory arrest. *

Treatment is a viable solution used to reverse these damaging crack cocaine effects, however the more severe the addiction, the more intense the treatment program needs to be. The first step in getting treatment for crack cocaine effects is going through a supervised detox process. During this process the body is cleansed of the obvious physical symptoms associated with crack cocaine use. After the detox has taken place, there are many different types of treatment through which a person can learn to live without the use of crack cocaine.

The most extreme crack cocaine effect is referred to as 'instant death' and can occur any time throughout a person's use of crack cocaine. 'Instant death' results when the body is imbalanced and the chemistry of the body is just a little bit off. When this happens a substance is released into the body that results in cardiac arrest, and ultimately death.

Crack cocaine, like most other illicit drugs, is extremely insidious, because even though the possibility of death is just around the corner, the drug addict continues to use without care. This feeling of worthlessness is one emotional crack cocaine effect. The person becomes so emotionally beaten down by the use of this drug that they even lose interest in their own life. Drug addicts begin to drive people out of their lives until they are practically in complete isolation. This isolation often results in chronic depression and furthers the drug addiction cycle.
